Professor Shaker Meguid

Professor Shaker Meguid is an internationally renowned and respected scholar with significant contributions in applied, computational and experimental mechanics at varied length scales. His research activities have contributed significantly to the areas of aerospace and automotive engineering, multiscale modelling, advanced and smart nanocomposites, crashworthiness, fracture mechanics and failure prevention. He has published over 300 papers in leading tier-1 scientific journals, gave over 250 presentations in international conferences of significance with a large number being invited as keynote/plenary speaker. He authored 3 books on fracture mechanics, Computer Aided Design and nanomechanics, and edited 2 books and 20 international conference proceedings and contributed 17 book chapters.

He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Int. J of Mechanics and Materials in Design, Founding Editor-in-Chief of Nano Micro Mechanics Review, former Technical Associate Editor of ASME J. of Engineering Materials and Technology (for two consecutive terms), former Associate Editor of IMechE Journal of Mechanical Process Engineering, Guest Editor to a number of Journals including Mechanics of Materials and a member of the editorial board of numerous journals.

He is the Founding Head of the Aerospace Engineering Division of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, one of the top aerospace programs in Asia. He taught different branches of mechanics in 4 different continents: Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. He has conducted consultancy work for the United Nations. He is a lifetime senior member of AIAA, member of the American Academy of Mechanics, Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (PEng), Chartered Engineer in Great Britain (CEng), Fellow of ASME, Fellow of IMechE and Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada. He works closely with the aerospace and automotive industries and is regularly approached by members of the media for clarification of engineering issues.

Professor Meguid and his research team won many awards over the years. Engineering Award-Research and Development by the Professional Engineers of Ontario for his significant contribution to research and development in Canada. In 2023, Professor Meguid was awarded the EuraSEM Excellence Award by the European Society for Experimental Mechanics for his outstanding contributions to research, teaching and service to the community in the field of experimental mechanics applied to mechanical design and materials. He is also a fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada in “Recognition of excellence in engineering and for service to the profession and society”, March 5, 2011.
